Audi’s SUV offensive continues without stopping and few models will join brand’s Q range in 2018. The new SUV will take the position of the flagship model above the recently redesigned Q7. Audi previewed this model with the concept version at the 2017 Detroit Show and the prototype was also caught on several locations while testing.
Judging by the spy photos the new flagship SUV will adopt similar styling as the concept version and will arrive in several variants including plug-in hybrid version and more potent conventionally powered options. The model will probably arrive as the 2019 Audi Q8 and will boast sportier appearance with a more raked profile. It will possess technologically advanced cockpit and will also rely on the latest safety achievements. The rivals will include Mercedes GLE Coupe, BMW X6 and Range Rover Sport.
2019 Audi Q8: Platform, Design
The all-new 2019 Audi Q8 will share similar proportions as the Q7 model and two models will also exploit the same platforms. The model will measure over 5 meters in length and will ride on 3-meter wheelbase. The platform is VW’s MLB designed for the front-wheel-drive, longitudinal engine configuration vehicles.
Visually, the Q8 will have a sportier profile and wider track than the Q7. It will also sit lower and have some more pronounced styling elements. The model will carry bolder grille version than Audi’s other SUVs and the sloped roofline will add additional visual interest. On the rear side, it will adopt similar taillights as the concept version but with slightly modified graphics.
The production Q8 will have traditional door handles and larger side mirrors, unlike the concept car, but will keep its racy silhouette.
Inside, the all-new Q8 will have similar dashboard design as the newest A8. The model will include two touchscreens, one for the MMI infotainment features and one for the HVAC and other controls. The second generation of the virtual cockpit will also be available in this SUV. Two models will also have similar center consoles.
On the other hand, the five-seat configuration will be in the production version while the concept has four seating positions. Audi will, of course, offer this model in different interior themes and with tons of other tech and convenience features including also the newest assisting systems.
2019 Audi Q8: Powertrain options
As for the powertrain options, the 2019 Audi Q8 will be available in several versions. The base Q8 will have a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine. The engine will come in the combination with the 8-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. This powertrain will provide about 354 hp and torque of 369 lb-ft.
The plug-in hybrid Q8 should also be on the offer. The setup should be similar to the concept version. A 3.0-liter TFSI engine combined with the electric motor provides 442 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The battery is 17.9-kWh lithium-ion unit.
Audi should also offer more potent versions. The SQ8 and possibly RS Q8 could be on the shelf. In some markets, not in the US, a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V-8 diesel will likely be under the hood of the SQ8. The RS Q8 could come with the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 from the RS 7 Performance.
2019 Audi Q8: Arrival, Price
The 2019 Audi Q8 is expected in late 2018. It could also come as the 2020 model. The price range should start from about $65k and climb slightly above 100k for the top-end version.
